BiomWeb.

A formidable synergy between microbiology, engineering, and IoT sensors that will disrupt the Wastewater Treatment Sector

The water sector is ripe for a leap in the innovation curve.

Globally, less than 10% of collected wastewater receives any form of treatment. Despite significant investments in wastewater treatment infrastructure, levels of treatment in rapidly urbanizing, low and even high income cities are not keeping pace with population growth.

However, donors and governments continue to invest millions of dollars in the traditional Centralized WWT approach despite its drawbacks.

This is analogous to the energy sector’s troubles from over-reliance on centralization and the consequent carbon lock-in.

BiomWeb promotes the development of a decentralized networks of nature-based WWT systems that are remotely monitored and require minimal operational maintenance.

These would result in small-scale facilities dispersed throughout a country, and allow for independent, self-maintained, and self-sustained facilities that are scalable via a network of partnerships.

There is no Waste

BiomPod

The design philosophy behind BiomPod is there is no waste in nature. Our goal is to carefully emulate aquatic systems found in nature in a way that will minimize maintenance and operational costs, and avoid the use of chemicals.

The result is a system that harnesses bacteria, microbes, fungi, insects, and plants, found in nearly any wetland, to treat wastewater and even immobilize toxic heavy metals.

At a minimum, the system consists of 1 Anaerobic Tank and 1 Aerobic Tank. The system’s design is modular, so additional anaerobic and/or aerobic tanks can be added in series for increased treatment capacity, or in parallel for additional throughput.

BiomPortal

Because BiomWeb is a biological system, problems can take a long time to manifest into observable symptoms, and even longer if nobody checks the system regularly. Furthermore, because BiomWeb is a biological system, solutions will take a long time to restore the BiomPods’ ecosystems. This is why Mrüna created BiomPortal. BiomPortal is a suite of sensors and software for monitoring and controlling the BiomWeb system. Although the BiomPods can treat wastewater without BiomPortal,

BiomPortal is vital for:

  • Diagnosing problems, from environmental conditions to malfunctioning devices.

  • Taking preventative action, before serious problems manifest.

  • Monitoring performance, such as the total volume of water that has been treated.

  • Automating control, such as turning off pumps at scheduled intervals.

BiomWeb

The combination of the sensors and web application will allow for the central management of collections of decentralized systems, and put it in the hands of the client or facility management. Doing so will allow the client to rapidly adapt to local environmental, regulatory, and commercial conditions.

This approach allow for independent, self-maintained and self-sustained facilities that are capable of scaling services effectively via partner SMEs.

The sensor information for volume metering, temperature and turbidity will allow the client to develop safety measures to estimate the quality of the wastewater treated, identify abnormal conditions, and to immediately alert the client and project team remotely.

These features will be beneficial to municipalities or disaster response teams which need to manage many facilities dispersed within a wide area.

For example, there are thousands of Informal Settlements in Lebanon which are managed by UNICEF

Features & Benefits

No De-sludging.

Only clean living water, just like nature intended.

Minimal.

No major civil work is needed to install the system or remove it.

No Chemicals.

Think biology, not chemistry. We mimic an entire river system.

Monitor.

Simple remote monitoring and control devices offer peace of mind.

Micro-footprint.

Compact underground containers can be placed in tight spaces.

Resilient.

Tolerates weather and effluent quality and quantity fluctuations.

Beautiful.

Can be displayed in public view as an aesthetic landscape feature.

Scalable.

Systems can be placed in series to increase capacity when needed.
